Get ready to have your mind blown, boggled and morphed. Camera Obscura will alter your perspective on the world as your face transforms right before your eyes. Lights, mirrors and a sprinkling of science masquerading as magic ensure this Edinburgh attraction never ceases to astonish. Camera Obscura will mess with your head in the best possible way. Open your eyes but don’t believe all they reveal – in here, nothing is as it seems. Everyone loves a good illusion, and at Camera Obscura you’ll get a lot more than that. ‘Lest five floors of baffling illusions isn’t enough to whet your appetite, there’s also the epic views across Edinburgh to look forward to from the rooftop telescopes. The centre, which has attracted and astonished visitors in equal measure since 1853, combines science with the sort of visual entertainment that will leave you wondering “How do they do that?” Start your trip off with the Camera Obscura show; it provides an excellent introduction to Edinburgh, as the city is projected onto a viewing table from a giant periscope. Interactive and informative, the show will give you a whole new outlook on scale and perspective as you grasp at the people and traffic traversing the urban diorama projected before you. Then it’s on to the centre’s World of Illusions in which ghostly hands glow, as if under an x-ray light, and visitors gawp in astonishment as their reflection is multiplied, face-swapped, inverted and wickedly manipulated. The Light Fantastic exhibition, meanwhile, is ripe with holographic projections who lurch towards you before evanescently dissipating as swiftly as they had appeared. Elsewhere, Edinburgh Vision details the evolution of the capital’s landmarks, from Victorian times to the present day. Finally, it’s on to the gift shop to browse the quirky collection of gadgets and gewgaws before emerging, blinking, into the sunlight on the Royal Mile.

To be honest was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did - it was not on our list of must see and dos on our Holiday to Scotland - however we had some spare time and thought we would check it out. We had a lot of fun with the interactive displays and was a great way to spend a couple of hours just spending time together laughing and having fun as a family. Highly recommend this for families or people who just want to explore the fascinating world of illusions and more.
